I grew up in a quiet, small town. Reading books and watching television sparked my curiosity about the varied world beyond my familiar surroundings. Instead of vacations to faraway lands, my horizons were expanded on Sunday drives with my parents. Two dollars worth of gasoline and a picnic lunch would fuel hours of exploration.
On those trips, things I knew of but had never seen in person came to life. From airplanes soaring over skyscrapers to natural wonders, I was captivated by it all. Whenever we took a Polaroid of something we saw, I’d be spellbound watching the film develop. It felt like magic. Years later, my memories of those outings are bordered by that familiar white frame.
Today, my lifelong passion for road trips continues. I still get excited when I encounter things noteworthy or unexpected along the route. Photographing the sights that stir the child within and creating contemporary renditions of yesterday’s Polaroids connects my past and present.
